The Evolution of BeyondCapture IMAGING. A Statement by BCI's Creative Director, Mark Bergsma

My photography career really began with my father giving me a camera at 28. He said “I think you have some talent and you should really do something with it.” My creative work mostly revolved around fine art photography. Passion, pride, patience, persistence, and practice became a list of words I worked by. Owning, designing and operating my own gallery/production facilities with employees, overhead, merchandise displays, and invitational shows since 1990 paved the path to business and marketing skills. Credibility, visibility, accessibility, reliability, and adaptability became new working mantras.
I was never one to leave well enough alone. The “pathway to perfection” was knocking at my door again. At first, film base capture and printing of those images was exciting but I soon found myself spending hours in the darkroom to create just the “right look.” I began noticing that analog photography had its limitations. I surged ahead with new found knowledge of computers. I bought a Kaypro Computer (big mistake) to learn the basics. I was like a child learning how to crawl. The progress was slow at first. In 1995 I purchase a top of the line Gateway computer with 16 megabytes of ram and a 4 gigabyte hard drive for $5000.00. I thought I was “in the game,” but soon began to notice the shortcomings of this hardware. I was enticed by this new software called “Photoshop.” I needed more power, faster processors, and more ram. I got caught up in the world of tech. It seemed like I would never get there. The cost of needed ram chips was outrageous and the stock market was caught up in the same storm.
More ram, bigger hard drives, better printers, new operating systems, advances in software found me with a wish list that could make a grown adult feel like a kid in a candy store when it came to high tech. In 2002 the storm settled a little when my first Mac G4, plugged with 2 gigs of ram was purchase for another $5000.00. It came with a space ship of a monitor called and Apple Studio Display. It looked like something Flash Gordon would have had on his smokin’ rocket ship. I was captivated. My wife used to leave little yellow stickies on my monitor stating “this does not compute.” She is an accountant. I kept on dreaming.
Fast forward to today and I still have the trusty G4 that has been upgraded somewhat and the old Studio display was reluctantly retired to the local recycle joint, at a cost of course. New purchases have included a G5 and some Cinema Displays, Wacom tablets, and CS3 premium suite (see Tools We Utilize page) I am sure it will not stop. The advances from film based imaging, to embracing digital capture and image editing software/hardware will always keep the wish list on the table.
BeyondCapture IMAGING was born out of a need to specialize. I wanted to focus on working in an art form I really enjoyed. I wanted to leverage all the talents collected over the years to employ and use effectively. I adapted to art, color and design principals that many illustrators use to ad beauty and depth to images, with complete focus on the subject matter. I think of BeyondCapture IMAGING as a team member that clients can use to facilitate, clarify and assist complex problem-solving in modern commercial photographic illustration.
